Ted Danson says he’s not the slick womanizer on ‘Cheers’ like Sam Malone.

Ted Danson is a well-known actor in the entertainment world. For the past 46 years, he has been working on several initiatives. He began his professional career in 1975 with Somerset, when he was a contract player.

He’s appeared in over 90 films since then, including Three Men and a Baby, Becker, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Cyber, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Damages, Bored to Death, Fargo, The Good Place, and Mr. Mayor.

The NBC sitcom Cheers is frequently credited with launching Danson’s four-decade career. Samuel “Mayday” Malone, a womanizing former baseball star and bartender, made his debut appearance on the show in 1982.

The critically praised show aired for 11 seasons and received numerous awards nominations. It was nominated for four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series.

Danson, on the other hand, was nominated for eleven Emmys and nine Golden Globes in a row, eventually winning two Emmys and two Golden Globes.

Sam Malone and Ted Danson

Danson’s persona Malone is a fictional character created by Glen and Les Charles for the comedy. He is the owner and bartender of the ‘Cheers’ bar, which is also the name of the program.

Malone pitched in the bullpen for the Boston Red Sox baseball team in the past. He’s also a reformed drinker and a notorious womanizer. Regardless, he is involved with Diane Chambers, a college-educated and clever woman, on and off.

Danson played a womanizing character on Cheers, but in real life, he is the polar opposite. In November 2018, the actor spoke with The Off Camera Show during his time as Malone.

He admitted that he was nervous about his role and didn’t recognize himself in Malone. He also admitted that watching the pilot made him cry since he was so bad at it.

He couldn’t identify with his character because he wasn’t a womanizer or a guy who went to bars looking for women. Similarly, he was unable to depict his character’s arrogance.

After a year of playing Malone, Danson figured out how to harness the character.

People and critics adored Danson’s portrayal of the charming young bartender, finding him amusing and appealing — something Danson did not think of Malone.

The actor, on the other hand, learned to “keep his mouth shut” and conceal his fears from his fans. Despite his difficulties, he delivered a flawless performance as Malone and received numerous nominations and awards for Cheers.

Wife of Ted Danson

Danson has had three marriages throughout his life. Randy Dawson was his first wife, and they were married from 1970 to 1975. Between 1977 through 1993, he was married to Casey Coates.

Danson and Coates have two children together. The actor is currently married to fellow actress Mary Steenburgen. Prior to her marriage to Danson, the actress was married to Malcolm McDowell, with whom she has two children.

Danson and Steenburgen’s love tale is unlike any other in Hollywood. They’ve been married for nearly 25 years and are still madly in love with one other.

They still make a point of raving about one other in public, despite the fact that they’ve been together for a long time. They met on the set of Pontiac Moon, a 1994 film in which they played a married pair, in which they played a married couple.

When they first met, Steenburgen was 40 and Danson was 45, and both of them were going through difficult times in their lives. The two did, however, meet and save each other.

Surprisingly, Steenburgen felt Danson looked just like Malone and was taken aback when he discovered he was the polar opposite of his character. While Steenburgen had a negative initial opinion of Danson, after knowing more about him, she fell in love with him.

The couple married in October 1995, and they have been living happily ever after ever since.
