How Did It Start for Jesse L. Martin?

Martin was born Jesse Lamont Martin Watkins on January 18, 1969, to his father Jesse Reed Watkins and his mother Virginia Prince in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

The Virginia native moved to Buffalo, New Rok when he was in grade school. He enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of Arts, where he graduated with a degree in theatre.

After graduating from university, Martin turned towards acting and started appearing at plays at local theatres and soap operas.

He toured the states with John Houseman’s The Acting Company. Then, he landed his first significant role as he started frequently appearing in CBS’s Guiding Light.

He made his Broadway debut in Timon of Athens, and his performance led him to recognition from the creators of the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Rent.
