Boomer was well-known in high school for being a three-sport athlete. He received a scholarship at the University of Maryland, where he set 17 school records. Jerry Claiborne and Bobby Ross were Esiason’s head coaches.

Esiason was drafted in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Esiason was the first quarterback selected in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
