Paul Reubens was born Paul Rubenfeld in Peekskill, New York, on August 27, 1952.

Judy Reubens, his mother, was an elementary school teacher, and Milton Reubens, his father, was a civilian pilot for the US Air Force and the Royal Air Force. They moved to Sarasota, Florida, and started a lamp business.

The 64-year-old attended Sarasota High School in Florida. He went on to Boston University and the California Institute of the Arts after that.

Reubens’ younger brother Luke Rubenfeld works as a dog trainer, while his younger sister Abby Rubenfeld works as an attorney. She is also the legal director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national gay and lesbian civil-rights group.

In 1991, Paul’s career had a major setback. During a raid by the detectives, he was caught at the South Trail Cinema, an adult theater in Florida. He was released from the county prison after paying a $219 bond for indecent exposure to a genital organ.

Faced with three years of probation, he enrolled in a year-long treatment program and agreed to register as a sex offender until the completion of his sentence. He was released on a $20,000 bail.
