English actress and vocalist Sally Ann Howes, 91, has been working professionally for more than six decades. She was born in John’s Wood, London, on July 20, 1930.

Howes has lived in New York before and holds dual citizenship with both the United States and Great Britain. She does, however, presently reside someplace in Florida.

Howes is the granddaughter of Broadway director Capt. J.A.E. Malone and the daughter of well-known English actor and comedian Bobby Howes.

Truly Scrumptious, a character she played in the 1968 musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, is one of her most well-known roles.

The career of Sally Ann Howes

Howes started her acting career at the age of 12. She had already contributed to various movie productions before turning 20. The film that stands out the most from her early career is Anna Karenina (1948).

She made her stage acting debut in 1950 with Leonard Bernstein’s Fancy-Free and then went on to feature in Sandy Wilson’s musical Caprice. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, her 1968 children’s film, is still her biggest box office success to date.

One of the finest writers in American history, Roald Dahl, who also wrote the classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, wrote the screenplay for the film.

She is still known to her fans and follows as Truly Scrumptious, the name of her character in the film. She played the role of Caractacus Potts opposite renowned actor Dick Van Dyke in the historical film.

Later, she appeared in the film adaptation of James Joyce’s acclaimed short story The Dead, which is set in Ireland.

The motion picture came out in 1987.

Howes spent a greater amount of time on the musical stage in the final stages of her career. Despite taking retirement in 1992, she continues to be involved in musical theater today.

In 1958, Howes wed American songwriter and author Richard Adler. Interestingly, this was Howes’ and Adler’s second union.

The actress was gracious enough to adopt Adler’s two children from his previous marriage after her passing in 1964.

After splitting from Howes in 1966, Adler got married a third time.

Howes, on the other hand, had two additional marriages. She has been wed to literary agent Douglas Rae for 48 years at this time. She described her marriage to Rae as her “biggest success” and “rock” in one of her interviews.

Howes: What Has He Done Since?

Unfortunately, little is known about Howes’ initiative or its whereabouts in the general public. Her last known appearance occurred in 2012, when she was photographed with her husband Rae at the Theatre Guild Dinner for Palm Beach Dramaworks.

It is understood that she is currently employed by the Guild in Florida as an artistic advisor.
