Doctors informed her parents shortly after her birth in 2005 that she would require surgery to extract her spinal cord from a lump known as a Lipoma. Sophie was able to enjoy a relatively healthy life after the procedure.

There were, however, certain difficulties from the Spina Bifida. A serious urinary tract infection is one of them. To get her urine out, she had to self-catheterize. Nicole and Boris also attempted alternative remedies on their daughter. To help Sophie have a healthy digestive tract, they tried acupressure massage, laser acupuncture, and probiotic pills.

Nicole and Boris established Sophie’s Voice Foundation as a non-profit organization in honor of their little princess Sophie, who was born with Spina Bifida. SVF’s purpose is to improve the quality of life for children and adults with Spina bifida and to promote awareness about how to prevent it.

SVF also educates multicultural communities around the world about the necessity of families developing healthy lifestyle habits one day at a time. Additionally, in December 2011, Boris and Nicole’s group launched The Center for Spina Bifida Research, Prevention, and Policy (CSB).

Sophie and her brother Nicolas became more interested in their parents’ efforts and projects as they grew older. As a result, Sophie’s parents decided to expand SVF’s activities to include some of their children’s social and cultural activist passions. Nicole and Boris changed the name of their organization to the Kodjoe Family Foundation after June 2019.
