Kanako Urai aka Asuka (born on 26th September 1981 in Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese professional wrestler currently signed to WWE. She’s a former SmackDown Women’s Champion and performs on the SmackDown brand under the ring name Asuka and is one-half of the Women’s Tag Team Champions alongside Kairi Sane.

  • Firstly, Asuka worked as a contributor for XBOX magazine and as a graphic designer for Nintendo DS.
  • She started her professional career as a wrestler on 16th June 2004, appearing in AtoZ under the ring name Kana.
  • Asuka wrestled with various wrestlers for a couple of years but had to retire due to a chronic nephritis injury. She retired on 19th March 2006.
  • However, she made a comeback as a freelance wrestler on 22nd September 2007 and played for various promotions including NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling, Ice Ribbon, Pro Wrestling Zero1, JWP Joshi Puroresu and Pro Wrestling Wave.

  • Urai was also the participant to the battle royal on 13th January 2016 episode of NXT.

  • She also became the winner of the SmackDown Women’s Championship in a match against Lynch and Flair who were pushed off a ladder by Ronda Rousey.
  • In January 2019, she started a feud with Becky Lynch and they were set for a title match at the Royal Rumble on which she retained her title through submission.
  • On 16th April 2019, she managed a newly formed women’s tag team consisting of Asuka and the debuting Kairi Sane from NXT and dubbed their team as “The Kabuki Warriors”.
