Smith regrets slapping Chris Rock
Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock on social media on Monday for slapping him during the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, calling his behavior “unacceptable and inexcusable.” The incident occurred before Smith accepted the prize for best actor later that night.
“Jokes at my expense are part of the business,” Smith wrote on Instagram, “but a joke regarding Jada’s physical condition was too much for me to handle, and I reacted emotionally.”
“I’d like to make a public apology to you, Chris.” “I was wrong and out of line.”
Smith was offended by a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head made by Rock. Pinkett-Smith has admitted to having a hair loss problem. “Will Smith just knocked the s—- out of me,” Rock stated after Smith hit him.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your f——- lips,” Smith repeatedly yelled at Rock.
He apologized to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as his other nominees upon accepting his Oscar. He didn’t say anything about Rock.
The Academy stated Monday that it opposes Smith’s actions during Sunday’s Oscars and that it intends to launch a formal investigation into his activities.
“The Institution condemns Mr. Smith’s actions during last night’s show,” the film academy stated in a statement released Monday. We’ve begun a thorough investigation into the incident, and we’ll consider additional actions and repercussions in accordance with our bylaws, rules of behavior, and California law.”
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Rock has declined to seek charges in connection with the incident.
Smith’s full statement is as follows:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
I am a work in progress.”
