Oscar Gutierrez Rubio aka Rey Mysterio (born on 11th December 1974 in Chula Vista, California, United States) is an American professional wrestler who is currently signed to WWE. Here he competes on the Raw brand under the ring name Rey Mysterio. He has won the Cruiserweight Championship five times, a Cruiserweight Champion and three more as a World Champion in Pairs.
Furthermore, he has won two Full Weight Championships, one WWE Championship, three Cruiserweight Championships, two Intercontinental Championships, and four WWE Tag Team Championships.
Rey Mysterio: Wrestling Career
Oscar Gutierrez started his professional wrestling career at the early age of 14 on 30th April 1989 in Mexico. His uncle Rey Mysterio Sr. trained him where he learned the Lucha Libre high flying style that has been his trademark. His uncle gave him the name of Rey Mysterio Jr and that’s how he became Rey Mysterio from Oscar Gutierrez. In 1991, he won the award for the “Most Improved Wrestler” in Mexico while wrestling as Colibri.
After that, he made his debut for the Mexican promotion Assistencia Assesoria y Administracion (AAA) in 1992, under the guardianship of his uncle, Rey Mysterio Sr. Later in September 1995, he signed a contract with Extreme Championship Wrestling where he debuted at Gangstas Paradise, defeating Psicosis.
Further on 16th June 1996, he made his debut in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He won his first Cruiserweight Championship in July 1996 by defeating Dean Malenko. During his time in the company, he had involved in several feuds and won several titles. He won the Cruiserweight Championship five times, a Cruiserweight Champion and three more as a World Champion in Pairs.
He also had to reveal his face by unmasking his mask in 1999. After WCW has shut down, he signed into Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. He also travelled to Puerto Rico to take part in World Wrestling Council. In 2002, he signed into World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he put on his mask again. He debuted WWE in an episode of SmackDown! against Chavo Guerrero in July 2002.
There he won his first Cruiserweight Championship in WWE after defeating Matt Hardy. The contract with the WWE ended in February 2015 and so he quitted WWE. During his stay in WWE he won two Full Weight Championships, one WWE Championship, three Cruiserweight Championships, two Intercontinental Championships.
He won four WWE Tag Team Championships i.e. one from Guerrero’s hand, the first place at the Royal Rumble and the twenty-first wrestler in the history of the company to have won the three most important titles; Intercontinental, WWE and Full Weight.
After his departure from the WWE, Rey Mysterio returned to Mexico to fight in AAA. He is also very active in Lucha Underground since 2015. The leader of the WWE, Vince, decided to offer a new contract to the wrestler to return to the largest stage in the United States until 2020.
