Charlie Day and his wife Mary Elizabeth Ellis met while working on the series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2005 and married a year later.
However, before the sitcom, the two had known each other for a long time.
Ellis discussed how she and her husband met during an appearance with AfterBuzz TV Red Carpets & Interviews in September 2018. They met while performing in a play in New York in 2001. She also described their relationship as a continuing one-night stand.
Charlie Day’s Wife
Day, like his wife, has spoken openly about how he and Ellis met on several occasions. He offered a basic timeline of his relationship with his wife during Wired’s autocomplete interview.
Day said he met Ellis in December 2001 and married her on March 4, 2006.
However, before approaching Ellis in 2001, he and a friend had arm-wrestled to see who would be the first to approach her.
While eating hot wings with Sean Evans, host of the enormously successful interview series Hot Ones, he told the story.
“One of my frailest and most frail buddies. In an arm-wrestling match, I was able to defeat him. We had an arm wrestle, and I won, and that’s how I met my wife.”
When Evans asked if Day had considered how his life would have changed if he had lost the competition, the actor replied that it would have remained the same because he “still would have talked to her” because he wasn’t the most honorable person.
Charlie Day and his wife are the proud parents of a son.
On December 15, 2011, Day and his wife welcomed their first and only child together, son Russell Wallace Day, after ten years of marriage.
While speaking with People in Los Angeles, the couple revealed the birth of their baby. “The amount of love that ushered our kid into the world has delighted and overwhelmed us.”
Their son’s name is derived from Day and Ellis’s ancestors. Russell is from Ellis’s family, and Wallace is from Day’s.
