During Kareem’s senior year at UCLA, the former couple met at a Lakers game. After dating for a while, the couple decided to tie the knot. On May 28, 1971, the event was held according to Muslim norms.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was so committed to Islam that he didn’t even ask his parents to the wedding. Kareem revealed to America Aljazeera that he made the error of not inviting his parents, which took him a decade to fix.

He also said that he was so devoted to Islam that despite having a deep affection for another woman, he married a woman suggested by Hammas. As a result, the marriage was doomed from the beginning.

Their Reason for Divorce

Kareem married against his teacher’s wishes as a devout Muslim and eventually divorced. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA champion who wowed the world with his sky-hook, had an unconventional relationship with his ex-wife.

After their marriage and two children, Habiba and Kareem lived in different homes for a short time. Since 1973, the former partners had not lived together.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Kareem Abdul Jabbar confessed that no one had a greater impact on his life than Cheryl Pistono. Kareem’s belief appears to have been challenged by a woman who pushed him to seek a divorce from an estranged marriage.

When Habiba was three months pregnant with Sultana, Kareem revealed his desire to divorce. As a result, their marriage was dissolved in a religious ceremony, and later divorced in civil court at Kareem’s request.

In March 1983, their divorce was formalized. However, it is unknown whether Cheryl Pistono was involved in the divorce of the separated couple. In any case, Jabbar and Janice, alias Habiba, both moved on quickly. Kareem had already given birth to a son, Amir Abdul-Jabbar, when Habiba Jabbar, or Habiba J. Herbert, remarried in 1986 and gave birth to a son named Sean.
