A father has done his job well when his son achieves great success while still carrying on his father’s legacy, quoting his words, and idolizing his father more than anybody else.

The ‘Antetokoumpo brothers,’ named after Charles Antetokoumpo, have earned a name for themselves in the basketball world.

This man, who was born in Nigeria and later moved to another nation, did everything he could to provide a better future for his children.

Let’s have a look at some interesting facts about the Godfather of Stars.

Charles Antetokounmpo, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s father | Early Life & Marriage

Charles was born in Nigeria on August 3, 1963. He was born within the Yoruba ethnic group in Nigeria and spent the majority of his childhood there before moving to Greece.

In Nigeria, he married his loving wife, Veronica Antetokoumpo. The specific date of their wedding has yet to be announced, however, it was held in the presence of family, relatives, and elders.

Veronica, on the other hand, is from Nigeria’s Igbo ethnic group. She was also a former athlete who competed in high jump competitions.

Charles Antetokounmpo | Immigration and the First Child

On October 20, 1988, Charles Antetokoumpo gave birth to his first child, Francis Antetokoumpo, in Laos, Nigeria. They moved to Athens, Greece, for the sake of their child’s lifestyle.

They left their child Francis in the care of their grandparents in Nigeria for the time being. Francis, too, relocated to Greece with his parents after a few years.

Father of Giannis Antetokounmpo | In Greece

Despite the fact that they traveled to Greece in search of a better lifestyle, they did not find it. They also encountered racism because they lived in a neighborhood where they were the only black family.

After relocating to Greece in 1992, he had a second child, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, who went on to become a household name in the NBA.

He also had The Greek Freak Giannis Antetokounmpo, a now-legendary basketball player, after two years.

Charles Antetokounmpo, Giannis’ father, toiled in a variety of odd jobs, while his wife Veronica worked as a babysitter. Thanasis and his younger brother Giannis were often seen selling watches, handbags, and sunglasses on the streets.

Unfortunately, money was always an issue, so Charles would go hungry to feed his children. He did, however, frequently go out of his way to provide for his children.

He had his other child, Kostas Antetokounmpo, in 1997, and his youngest son, Alex Antetokounmpo, in 2001. As a result, both of them are currently the most prominent figures in the basketball scene.

They were unable to get citizenship despite having lived in Greece for many years and having four children there.

As a result, they were left stateless for years, unable to move to another nation because they lacked documentation from both governments.

Adetokunbo to Antetokounmpo | Charles Antetokounmpo

Giannis eventually became a citizen of Greece in 2013, just two months before the NBA Draft. However, upon being translated into Greek, the Adetokunbo was mistranslated as Antetokounmpo.

As a result, all of his family members changed their surnames to Antetokounmpo, giving them a unique surname.

‘The Antetokounmpo Brothers’ are who they say they are.

We talked a lot about these brothers as a group, but we didn’t truly understand how they managed to make this father’s head soar.

Let’s look at The Antetokounmpo Brothers.

Antetokounmpo, Francis

Francis is Charles’s first and only child, having been born outside of Greece. They moved to Greece to provide him a better future, leaving him in Nigeria with his grandparents for a few years.

He is a semi-professional basketball player. So it is with his brother, despite the fact that he is the one who has followed in his father’s footsteps. He is a professional soccer player, after all.

He has spent more time investigating himself than anyone else, while not being as well-known as his brothers. He, too, has dabbled with musical endeavors.

Francis’ first single, ‘Shekoshi,’ was released on July 22, 2020.

Antetokounmpo, Thanasis

He is a professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association, where he is known as ‘The Greek Streak’ (NBA).

He began his pro career with Filathlitikos, averaging 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 block per game.

The New York Knicks selected Thanasis 51st overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. However, two years later, in 2016, he made his NBA debut.

In 2019, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, reuniting with his brother Giannis and winning the NBA Finals with the Bucks in 2021.

Antetokounmpo, Giannis

Out of the five brothers, Giannis is the most accomplished, having earned back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player titles in 2019 and 2020. Apart from LeBron James and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, he is the only player to win before reaching the age of 26.

Milwaukee Bucks selected the MVP 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. He is a member of Buck, together with his brother Thanasis, and has appeared in five All-Star Games.

Giannis was dubbed Greek Freak because of his size, quickness, and ball-handling talents at 6 feet 11 inches.

Furthermore, during the contract extension 2020, the Milwaukee Bucks offered him the highest contract in NBA history.

In the 2021 NBA Finals, Giannis led the Bucks to their first championship in 50 years.

Throughout the series, the Bucks’ star averaged 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.8 blocks, earning him undisputed MVP honors. Since Kawhi Leonard in 2014, he is the youngest Finals MVP.

Antetokounmpo, Kostas

Giannis’ family relocated to the United States in 2013, and Kostas attended Dominican High School for his junior and senior years. Kostas was a member of their basketball team his senior year, and he helped them win the state championship.

Kostas was selected with the final pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He was eventually traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

On July 22, 2019, the Los Angeles Lakers claimed Antetokounmpo off waivers. In 2020, he appeared in five games over the course of the season but was not selected to play in the championship game.

That season, though, the Laker won the NBA title, defeating the Miami Heat, making Kostas the first Greek player to do so.

Antetokounmpo, Alex

He is the youngest of the three children, thirteen years younger than Francis. Alex attended St. Monica School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, after his family relocated to the United States in 2013.

Alex graduated from Dominican High School, just like his older brother Kostas. In high school, he was a two-time All-State basketball player.

Due to his basketball abilities, he received scholarship offers from DePaul, Ohio, and Green Bay. As a result, he dropped out of college to pursue a professional career in Spain’s Liga ACB.

In addition, after being undrafted in the NBA Draft in 2021, he joined the Sacramento Kings for the NBA Summer League in 2021. In 2021, the Kings went on to win the NBA Summer League.

Giannis’ perspective on family values

Giannis’ work ethic, mental makeup, and tale have established the ‘Giannis effect’ around America as human manifestations of dedication, hope, and hard work.

Giannis’ location

A tiny guy playing baseball in Greece was far from the ideal build for a baseball player. However, he demonstrated and made himself known to the agents, and his career took a turn for the better as a result of his abilities.

The first goal in obtaining the opportunity was to improve his physical condition by improving his diet, but this was a difficult task in a large family with many mouths to feed and a limited budget.

His family, on the other hand, went above and beyond to supply him with whatever he need and to remove any hurdles, for which he is eternally grateful.

He quickly attracted the attention of an NBA team based entirely on his play in Greece and with little support from agents.

Into the Unknown | Giannis

He was picked by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013, although he was not a fan of the news. His family was unable to attend, and he was unconcerned about the NBA, preferring to focus on his family.

He was whoever he was because of his family, and he couldn’t just dump them and move to America.

His father, on the other hand, persuaded and encouraged him, indicating that this opportunity could be useful to their family, and he gratefully followed his father’s counsel and returned to the United States.

As he previously stated,

“MY FAMILY GAVE UP A LOT TO GIVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE HERE, AND I CAN’T THANK THEM ENOUGH ON A DAILY BASIS.”

He felt vulnerable, and terrified, and would sleep at the gym since he had no reason to go home because he was separated from his family and living in a new country. Giannis refused to return home because he was lonely.

It was a trying time for him because he didn’t know if his family would be able to join him.

In addition, his family visa has been denied twice out of three chances. He claimed that if this happened a third time and his family was unable to visit, he would leave the United States.

Giannis | Ascending to the Pinnacle

His family’s arrival on his Visa was more important to him than being drafted into the NBA.

HIS PARENTS’ BIRTH YEARS ARE REFLECTED IN HIS JERSEY NUMBER 34, AS HIS FATHER WAS BORN IN 1963 AND HIS MOTHER IN 1964.

His parents are mostly responsible for establishing these qualities in him, and his work ethic, character, and family values are the key reasons for his success.

Charles Antetokounmpo, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s father | Death

Unfortunately, on September 20, 2017, the person who helped him become a man of character died at the age of 54. As a result, he missed out on seeing his son become the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.

Charles died of a heart attack at his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, suddenly. The Antetokounmpo family was taken aback by this news.

His memories have always remained with his sons, even when Dad passed away.

They believe that winning and losing are unimportant and that what counts most is honoring their father’s legacy. As a result, the brothers’ principal ambition in life is to carry on their father’s legacy.
