James Anthony was born on July 22, 1942, and died two months before his 78th birthday from cancer. According to his obituary, James grew up in a poor family and worked as a house cleaner with his mother to make ends meet in Los Angeles. After graduating from high school, he relocated to Los Angeles with his mother to pursue his acting career.

The late actor, who went by the stage name Anthony James, was barely 26 years old when he made his breakthrough as a killer in Norman Jewison’s film In the Heat of the Night.

With his final film performance as Skinny Dubois in Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven,” James retired in the early 1990s. The film, like his debut, In the Heat of the Night, received an Academy Award for Best Picture.
